Constructed in 1964, Bonneville Tower is a one of Salt Lake City’s most pristine examples of Mid-Century Modern architecture.
It was designed by M.E. Harris, Jr., a Salt Lake architect credited with several other buildings of distinctive design. While more is to be learned about the origins of the concept, we understand that original plans called for a matching structure to be built on the northwest corner of “K” Street.
From its beginning, Bonneville Tower attracted many prominent residents.
The reinforced concrete structure comprises a 13 floor brown brick tower rising from a three story base of indoor parking and storage, surrounded by white cast stone filigree. Virtually all units provide expansive views of Salt Lake Valley. A manicured garden, circular driveway, and porte-cochere welcome residents and visitors to the black and white marble-clad lobby.
The scale of the lower portion of the building is consistent with other structures on South Temple, identified by the American Planning Association as one of America’s 10 greatest streets.
The tower starts on the third floor and sets back on the tenth and fifteen. Units on the third floor have deep terraces. The common area on the north-facing side has an outdoor swimming pool and dining pavilion. All the penthouse units are terraced as well as the south facing tenth floor units. All other units have French balconies.
The condominium association maintains an ongoing program of upgrades and improvements, mindful of its responsibility to maintain the building’s architectural integrity and its role as one of South Temple’s prominent structures.
